Chapter 14

Jackson

It had been two weeks since Alexa moved in. Fourteen days of torture. Not because she lived with me, that was the easy part. Sleeping with her and not touching her was the issue. Every so often, in the middle of the night, I’d feel her drift toward me. One morning, I woke up and her head was on half of my pillow. Of course, it didn’t bother me, nor would I mention it. When I told her half of mine was hers, I meant it.

The commute to her bakery hadn’t been too bad for her. For the first few days, I drove her, using the gym as an excuse. But when I had to stop at said gym on our way home from the bakery, she found out that I had been going out of my way to drive her. From that day forward, Alexa being Alexa insisted on driving herself.

Everything else in our lives seemed to move along famously—thank goodness. My favorite Garth song came on the radio. It had great lyrics and soon became the theme song for our team. I went to turn it up when my phone’s ringtone blasted through the speakers instead. Seeing Alexa’s name brought an instant smile to my face.

“Hey, Lex. How’s the cookie biz?”

“Jack… son…” She sniffled, and my heart slammed against my ribs. On instinct, I pulled off the road, and made a U-turn toward the bakery.

“Sweetheart, what’s wrong?”

“Mom fell. I don’t know what to do.”

The orange needle on my speedometer shot to the right. “What happened? Did you call 9–1-1?”

“They’re here now. Her arm. Oh my God, her arm.” More sniffles, caused my foot to depress the pedal even more. “They think it’s broken. And her ankle. I can’t believe this.”

“Is Missy there?”

“No, she’s on vacation.”

She was alone. Reese and Trent were out of town, so Reese couldn’t help. When I glanced at the clock, they had two hours before closing time. I switched to the left lane and wove my way in and out of traffic so I could jump on the highway. It wouldn’t be long until I got off at the exit that would lead me to the bakery.

“I’ll be right there, and you can go with your mom.”

Her silence followed by muffled voices made me more nervous. “They’re taking her in now.”

Less than five minutes later, I saw the sign for Sugarcoat This! up ahead, flashing lights, followed by the sound of the ambulance’s siren was off in the distance. I pulled into the parking lot, turned off my truck, hopped out, and ran toward Alexa who was standing on the sidewalk staring toward where the ambulance had driven off. A few customers stood around her.

Before saying anything, I strolled up to her not caring about the people staring and pulled her into an embrace. Her immediate tears had me worried. Releasing my hold, I cupped her face and swiped at her tears with the pads of my thumbs.

“Let’s go inside, and we’ll figure out what to do.
